Soccer is the most popular sport on the planet and the most heavily bet sport in the world. In Canada, interest has never been higher. Canada co-hosted the 2026 FIFA World Cup, three Canadian clubs compete in Major League Soccer, the Canadian Premier League continues to grow, and millions of Canadians follow the English Premier League, the UEFA Champions League and the top leagues across Europe and South America every weekend.

For bettors, soccer offers something no other sport can match: matches almost every day of the year, hundreds of leagues to choose from and a huge range of betting markets. This guide explains how soccer betting works in Canada, where you can bet legally, which markets to know, and the strategies that help you make smarter picks on the beautiful game.

Yes. Since Bill C-218 came into force in August 2021, single-event sports betting has been legal across Canada. Before then, Canadians could only place parlay bets through provincial lotteries. Each province now decides how sports betting is offered within its borders.

  • Ontario: Has an open, regulated market overseen by iGaming Ontario and the AGCO, with dozens of licensed private sportsbooks plus OLG's Proline+.
  • Alberta: Launched its regulated private-operator market in July 2026, alongside the government-run PlayAlberta.
  • Quebec: Loto-Québec's Mise-o-jeu.
  • British Columbia and Manitoba: BCLC's PlayNow.
  • Saskatchewan: PlayNow SK, run in partnership with BCLC.
  • The territories: Lottery-based sports products such as Sport Select.
  • Atlantic Canada: Atlantic Lottery's Proline.

Many Canadians outside Ontario and Alberta also use internationally licensed sportsbooks. Check our provincial regulation guides for the rules where you live. You must be of legal gambling age in your province, which is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.

Major League Soccer (MLS)

MLS is the top league in North America and includes three Canadian clubs: Toronto FC, CF Montréal and the Vancouver Whitecaps. The regular season runs from late February to October, followed by the MLS Cup Playoffs. MLS is known for parity, travel across huge distances and big home advantages, all of which create betting opportunities.

Canadian Premier League (CPL)

The CPL is Canada's domestic professional league, with clubs such as Forge FC in Hamilton, Cavalry FC in Calgary, Pacific FC on Vancouver Island, HFX Wanderers in Halifax and Atlético Ottawa. Because CPL games receive less attention from oddsmakers and bettors than major European leagues, local knowledge can be a genuine advantage.

English Premier League

The Premier League is the most popular soccer league for Canadian bettors. Its matches kick off in the morning and early afternoon Eastern time on weekends, making them a natural fit for breakfast betting. Markets are deep and highly efficient, with odds offered on almost every possible outcome.

UEFA Champions League

Europe's elite club competition runs from September to the final in late May or early June. Midweek Champions League nights are among the busiest betting events of the season.

Other European Leagues

La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy), the Bundesliga (Germany) and Ligue 1 (France) all draw strong betting interest. Lower divisions such as the English Championship also offer value because they are less closely followed.

International Tournaments

The FIFA World Cup, the Gold Cup (North and Central America), the Copa América and the European Championship generate some of the biggest betting volume in sports. Canada's men's and women's national teams have both become serious competitors, with the women's team winning Olympic gold in 2021.

Women's Soccer

Women's soccer is one of the fastest-growing betting markets. The Northern Super League launched in 2025 as Canada's professional women's league, and the NWSL in the United States, the Women's Super League in England and the Women's World Cup all offer betting options.

Soccer Betting Markets Explained

Three-Way Moneyline (1X2)

The most common soccer bet. You choose a home win (1), a draw (X) or an away win (2) after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shootouts do not count. Because draws happen in roughly a quarter of matches in many leagues, this is a true three-outcome market.

Draw No Bet

Draw No Bet removes the draw. If the match ends level, your stake is refunded. You get lower odds than a straight win bet but protection against a draw.

Double Chance

Double chance covers two of the three outcomes in one bet: home or draw (1X), away or draw (X2) or home or away (12). It is a popular way to back an underdog not to lose.

Asian Handicap

Asian handicaps give one team a goal head start or deficit, using whole, half or quarter goals. A team at -0.5 must win. At -1, a one-goal win is a push and your stake is returned. Quarter lines such as -0.75 split your stake between two lines. Asian handicaps remove or reduce the draw and offer some of the best value in soccer betting.

Totals (Over/Under Goals)

You bet on whether the total number of goals goes over or under a line, most commonly 2.5. Lines such as 1.5, 3.5 and Asian totals (2.25, 2.75) are also available.

Both Teams to Score (BTTS)

A simple yes or no on whether both teams score at least one goal. BTTS is one of the most popular soccer markets in Canada and pairs well with result bets.

Correct Score

You predict the exact final score. Correct score bets offer big odds because they are hard to hit, so treat them as a small-stakes, high-reward market.

Goalscorer Markets

Bet on a player to score anytime, first or last, or to score two or more goals. Strikers and penalty takers are the most popular picks.

Half-Time and Full-Time

Predict the result at half-time and at full-time in one bet, such as draw at half-time and home win at full-time.

Corners and Cards

Specialty markets let you bet on total corners, team corners, total cards or a player to be booked. Referee tendencies and team styles play a big role here.

Futures

Futures include league winners, top-four finishes, relegation, Golden Boot winners, MLS Cup and World Cup winners.

Live Betting

In-play soccer betting is enormously popular. Odds change constantly during the match as goals, cards, injuries and momentum shift. Live betting lets you react to what you see, such as a dominant team that has not yet scored.

Understanding Soccer Odds

Canadian sportsbooks usually display odds in decimal or American format. Decimal odds show the total return per dollar: odds of 2.50 return $2.50 for every $1, including your stake. American odds show profit relative to $100: +150 means a $100 bet wins $150, and -200 means you must bet $200 to win $100. You can switch formats in most sportsbook settings.

Decimal American Implied Chance
1.50 -200 66.7%
2.00 +100 50.0%
2.50 +150 40.0%
3.40 +240 29.4%
5.00 +400 20.0%

Implied probability tells you what chance the odds suggest. If you believe a team's real chance of winning is higher than the implied probability, the bet has value.

Soccer Betting Strategy Tips

Do Not Underestimate the Draw

Draws are common in soccer, especially between evenly matched teams and in tight, defensive leagues. Many casual bettors ignore the draw entirely. Understanding draw rates in each league helps you price matches more accurately and decide when Draw No Bet or Asian handicaps make more sense than a straight win bet.

Use Expected Goals (xG)

Expected goals measures the quality of chances a team creates and concedes. A team that keeps losing despite a strong xG difference is often unlucky and due to improve, while a team winning with poor underlying numbers may be overvalued. xG data is freely available for most major leagues.

Check Team News and Lineups

Starting lineups are usually announced about an hour before kickoff. Injuries, suspensions and rotation can transform a match, especially for teams balancing league games with cup or Champions League fixtures.

Factor In Fixture Congestion

Teams playing three matches in a week often rotate players and tire late in games. Midweek European fixtures followed by weekend league games are classic spots where favourites underperform.

Respect Home Advantage in MLS

MLS home advantage is stronger than in most European leagues because of long travel distances, time zone changes, artificial turf at some venues, extreme weather and altitude in places such as Denver and Salt Lake City. Road teams on long trips are often vulnerable.

Specialize in a League

No bettor can follow every league closely. Focusing on one or two, such as MLS and the CPL, or the English Championship, lets you build knowledge that the market may not fully reflect. Smaller leagues tend to have softer lines.

Shop for the Best Odds

Prices differ between sportsbooks, especially on Asian handicaps, totals and player markets. Holding accounts at more than one licensed sportsbook available in your province lets you take the best price each time.

Watch Motivation Late in the Season

Teams fighting relegation or for a playoff place often outperform expectations, while teams with nothing to play for can lose focus. Motivation matters most in the final weeks of a season.

Be Careful With Accumulators

Soccer accumulators (parlays) combining several match results are extremely popular because the payouts look tempting. Each extra leg multiplies the sportsbook's edge, so long accumulators lose far more often than they win. Keep them small and use them for fun.

Manage Your Bankroll

With matches every day, it is easy to overbet. Set a budget, stake a consistent 1% to 3% of your bankroll per bet and keep records so you know which leagues and markets are working for you.

Live Soccer Betting Tips

  • Watch the match or a reliable live stats feed. Possession alone is misleading, so focus on shots on target and dangerous attacks.
  • Red cards transform matches. A team down to ten players often defends deeper, which affects totals and handicaps.
  • Late goals are common as teams push forward. Live over bets in the final 20 minutes can offer value when a trailing team needs a goal.
  • Odds suspend briefly after key events, so be ready to act quickly but avoid impulsive bets.

How to Choose a Soccer Betting Site in Canada

  • Licensing: Use sportsbooks regulated in your province or by a respected international authority.
  • League coverage: Look for MLS, CPL, European leagues and women's soccer.
  • Market depth: Asian handicaps, BTTS, corners and player props.
  • Live betting and streaming: Fast in-play markets and, ideally, live streams.
  • Odds format: The option to display decimal or American odds.
  • Canadian banking: Interac deposits and withdrawals in Canadian dollars.
  • Cash out: The ability to settle bets early.

Common Soccer Betting Mistakes

  • Forgetting that standard match bets only count 90 minutes, not extra time or penalties.
  • Backing big clubs because of their name rather than current form.
  • Building long accumulators of short-priced favourites.
  • Betting before lineups are confirmed.
  • Chasing losses with late-night live bets on unfamiliar leagues.

Responsible Betting

Soccer runs all year, so it is important to bet within your means. Use deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion tools offered by your sportsbook, and take breaks. Visit our Responsible Gambling page for support resources across Canada.

Soccer Betting FAQ

Does extra time count in soccer bets?

No. Standard soccer bets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Some sportsbooks offer separate "to qualify" or "to lift the trophy" markets that include extra time and penalties.

What is the safest soccer bet?

No bet is truly safe, but double chance and Draw No Bet reduce risk compared with a straight three-way bet, in exchange for lower odds.

Can I bet on the Canadian Premier League?

Yes. Most sportsbooks available in Canada offer CPL markets, although market depth is usually smaller than for MLS or the Premier League.

What does Asian handicap -0.75 mean?

Your stake is split between -0.5 and -1. If the team wins by two or more, both halves win. If it wins by exactly one goal, the -0.5 half wins and the -1 half is refunded. Any other result loses.

Are soccer betting winnings taxed in Canada?

For recreational bettors, gambling winnings are generally not taxable in Canada. Professional bettors may be treated differently, so consult a tax professional if betting is your main source of income.
